Firstly, both materials offer a very comfortable with a lovely supportive feel and are both hand-woven in the same traditional Mexican weave.

We are also often asked which one is better. Well, one is not necessarily better than the other it is more of a personal preference, and each offer slightly different features.

For instance we generally recommend cotton hammocks when comfort is the main priority. Cotton hammocks will stretch and mold very well to your natural body shape creating a very soft relaxing feel. 

Nylon hammocks are also very comfortable, but are more like a firm bed, whereas a cotton is like a soft bed. There will not be as much stretch in the nylon cord, but it still have a very comfortable and form fitting feel. The nylon cord is also very soft and smooth - there is not harshness at all to this material.

A benefit of the nylon is the greater durability it offers when exposed to the elements. We recommend caring for your hammock by protecting them from the elements when not in use, but the nylon will still preserve better in the elements. Both will still last many years with the proper care instructions we provide.

This is the Thick Cord Mexican Hammock. As the name implies it is woven with a thicker than normal cord, (cotton or nylon). This cord is upto four times thicker than our regular weave hammocks. 

A great benefit of this extra thick cord is the increased durability in the hammock. This makes it ideal for families with children who are climbing in and out of the hammock regularly. There is less chance of snagging and it holds a large amount of weight, so you can enjoy the hammock with the whole family.

The best way to hang your hammock will be determined by the current features of your house, so some ideas will work for some and not for others.

Decide which room you wish to hang your hammock from, maybe a bedroom, lounge or a sunroom. Consider the size of the room and what existing features you can use to support a hammock and your weight. You want around 3.5m - 4m of width with the hammock ends hung around 1.5-2m high. This will give it a nice banana hammock curve. Ideally you want the hammock when hung to hang down at it's lowest level between your hips and knees. This is also a good height to make entry and exit easy.

Perhaps you have exposed ceiling beams from which you can simply tie rope around and secure your hammock to. If you can't get a rope around a beam, check with your local hardware stock for potential fittings such as Screw Eye hooks that can be screwed directly into the beams. Then you can attach your rope to these.

Similarly if you have brick walls you can hardware such as 'dynabolts' or concrete screws to fix into your walls. In Mexico this is a very popular method and many houses have inbuilt hammock attachments in their brick walls. 

For walls with plaster board, you want to find a solid wall stud or joist that you can screw a hook through the plaster board into. One on each side with the same dimensions as mentioned above. They don't have to be aligned (but should be level), and can be on a angle across the room such as the picture above. Again from this you can then attach a rope from to your hammock. 

When screwing into walls try and ensure that both screws or hooks are at the same level so the weight and pressure on them is equally distributed.

If you are still unsure, we suggest you ask a local builder or handyman to setup your fixtures for you. A small, quick and inexpensive job yet once done you can then easily hang and enjoy your hammock year round whatever the weather! You can also simply just take down one end of the hammock and hang both ends off the one hook when you want your room space back. Short on room, try hanging your hammock over your bed, or using it instead of a bed.

The main difference between a cotton and nylon string hammocks is that cotton hammocks are softer and slightly more comfortable. This is due to them having more stretch which allows them to mould more to your body contours.

Make no mistake, nylon hammocks are also very comfortable. However they are slightly firmer and more durable. This makes them better for more constant outdoor use, with kids to travel with it. 

Cotton hammocks have nylon arms however the body of the hammock (part where you lay) is 100% cotton. The nylon arms provide the strength and support required to hold the weight of the hammock when in use.

In Western society the norm is to sleep the night through in a standard bed. However in other parts of the world such as in many areas of Mexico a hammock is the prefer method of sleeping the night through. 

Sleeping in a hammock is a great alternative to standard beds and there can be a number of benefits to this.

In hot climates it can be difficult keeping cool at night while you sleep which often leads to restless nights. A great benefit of sleeping in a Mexican hammock is the open weave pattern of the hammock which allows air to gently circulate around your body. You don't have the buildup of heat occuring from your body occuring such as when sleeping on a solid surfaced bed, resulting in a more comfortable nights sleep.

Saving space. If you use a hammock as a bed, you increase your usable living spaces. Get rid of the big bulky bed taking up half of a room and replace it with a hammock. A hammock can be put up and taken down when not in use, giving you all that extra floor space to use. This is particularly useful in smaller units, student flats or if you have large families to free up more room.

You may have noticed from our range of hammocks that we offer aThick Cord Hammock, whereas the majority of our hammocks are made in a finer cord.

So what is the difference and what is best for you..

Both cord varieties are woven in the exact same hand-woven manner, so there is not difference in quality.

Both are open weave patterns, so they provide excellent support and outstanding comfort as the cords gently mold to your body shape.

The main difference, just lies in the added durability that the thick cord offers. The cord is approx four times thicker than the fine cord. So this just adds a bit more durability to the hammock when exposed to the elements and playing children.

This is not to say the thiner cord hammocks are inferior, they offer the benefit of being very lightweight, but they are still extremely strong and supportive also. They may just not have as longer lasting durability as the thicker cord can provide.

In terms of comfort there is no real difference, and it is often just a matter of personal opinion. Some people will stick with one over the other, but either way you will be ensured a beautiful hand-woven hammock focused on providing you with relaxed comfort.

Hand-weaving a hammock is a true skill and tradition that has been past down by the indigenous Mayan indians of Mexican for thousands of years. Below is a short video demonstrating this hand-weaving process. The weaving is simply done in our weavers own living environment, giving them greatest freedom to go about their lives and work on creating the hammocks when it suits them. This is also a much more environmentally method of production than comparatively mass machined produced hammocks or lower quality.

It really is not a difficult process though once you know what you are doing.

First ensure you have your hammock setup and hung at the correct height as per your hammock instructions. The lowest part of your hammock should be between your hips and knees. This provides a good height to ease yourself down and into your hammock. As you do so hold each side of the hammock and spread it out, so you are sitting right in the center. The extra ends of material then can be pushed out with your feet and your arms, so you have full support from your feet to your head.
